POST PREGNANCY BEAUTY TIPS: WHAT INGREDIENTS YOU NEED TO USE

Postpartum, a woman’s skin can go through many changes. The hormone levels start to drop and the transition can cause a variety of skin issues. The adjustments will differ for everyone and whilst some mums may experience that post pregnancy glow others have to deal with acne, dry skin, pigmentation and stretch marks.

Sam Sargent founder and formulator of Be Genki says - “With skin care post-pregnancy, choosing 100% natural and organic products is the right choice as nature provides a bounty to choose from, especially when it comes to helping to remedy and prevent hormonal breakouts, decrease the appearance of pigmentation, and brighten that tired complexion. Look for the following ingredients in products as they specifically target those concerns and are safe to apply to the skin whilst breastfeeding.”

These key ingredients and products are safe for new mums and their bubs.
Pigmentation - The Be Genki Intensive Hydration Treatment contains key ingredients that help to prevent breakouts, reduce the appearance of pigmentation and fine lines.

Kakadu plum extract - Ridiculously high in natural vitamin C, this native Australian fruit helps to promote collagen production in the skin, increasing suppleness and diminishing the signs of ageing. It also works brilliantly to help improve the appearance of pigmentation and redness / discolouration. Get ready to see your fine lines, sun spots and under-eye dark circles improve.

Senna extract - The botanical alternative to hyaluronic acid, referred to as ‘the fountain of youth’ and it’s easy to understand why. It’s an effective humectant – meaning it’s really good at keeping your skin hydrated and full of moisture – and it has strong rejuvenating benefits, giving skin a smooth, soft, plump appearance, decreasing fine lines in the process. It also has anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-bacterial properties, which helps to prevent breakouts.

MSM -  This fancy sounding ingredient is a sulphur compound fundamental for collagen production. It works to even skin tone, decrease hyper-pigmentation, reduce the appearance of age spots, and to soften the skin. As well as an anti-inflammaotry, it also encourages your skin to pick up the right nutrients and detoxing the bad ones.

Stretch Marks - The Be Genki Softening Body Oil contains key ingredients that help to prevent and minimise the appearance of stretch marks. It’s ideal to use during and post-pregnancy. But also, great to use on your baby as the calming essential oils help to soothe and calm both mum and baby. Depending how old your baby is, you may prefer to dilute the body oil with jojoba oil.

Avocado oil - Yes, it’s great on your sourdough with a bit of fresh lemon and chili, but it also gives your skin a whole bunch to smile about. Rich in essential fatty acids and vitamins, avocado oil is great for creating soft and smooth skin. It’s fast absorbing and naturally triggers collagen production in your skin, too. Best part is that it’s suitable for all skin types: from fine lines and wise wrinkles, to dry and irritated, to eczema and psoriasis, and to oily and acne prone skin.

Neroli - Whilst this essential oil is rumoured to be one of the key ingredients in Coca-Cola’s secret recipe, it is most popular in creating perfumes. We like it for its sedative and antidepressant properties, which can help with states of anxiety and depression. It’s also used for treating dry, sensitive skin, improving the appearance of broken capillaries and stimulating the growth of healthy new cells.

Rose Geranium - More than just a crowd favourite at flower shows, this Egyptian native is renowned for its uplifting and calming effects on the nervous system, making it a go-to essential oil for remedying stress, anxiety, and even time-of-the-month or menopausal tension. It also helps to balance oil production in your skin, no matter your skin type, and target cellulite and fluid retention.

Acne/Breakouts - The Be Genki Rejuvenating Beauty Oil contains key ingredients that help to prevent breakouts, reduce the appearance of pigmentation and fine lines.

Chia seed oil - High in essential fatty acids, this light, silky oil is especially beneficial for dry, sensitive and acne-prone skin. It’s rich in phytonutrients and antioxidants, each working to provide your skin protection against free radicals – those nasty buggers that can cause cell damage. Because of its silky and hydrating properties, it’s widely used to help minimise the appearance of fine lines and enlarged pores. The chia seed is also a great addition to a smoothie, so you’ll likely find it hanging out with the acai berry at your local café.

Prickly pear seed oil - The only thing prickly about this oil is its original cactus-like form. Absorbed quickly, this oil works to nourish, moisturise and soften the skin, leaving your lines and wrinkles smooth, your dark spots bright again, and your pores just right. Whilst it will remedy the signs of ageing, it’s also there to protect you against them, with a potent level of vitamin E and fatty acids, ensuring there’s nothing free about those free radicals.

Copaiba resin - A South American native, Capaiba is useful in treating sensitive skin, particularly acne-prone, due to its anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory properties. This also makes it helpful in reducing redness, lightening the appearance of blemishes and healing wounds. And if you’re feeling particularly open, take inspiration from the Yaviza people of Panama who mix the resin with honey and give it to newborns to impart knowledge and ward off hexes.

Andiroba oil - Coming from the Brazilian Andiroba Tree, this seed is known for absorbing into your skin fast. It packs a punch, too, containing a whole lot of vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, and anti-inflammatory properties, all working to help improve eczema, psoriasis conditions, balance hormonal skin break-outs, calm acne, replenish dry skin and work to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Spilanthes acmella flower extract - Known as ‘nature’s botox’, this flower is renowned for its ability to relax facial tension, firm your skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines. Because we smile, frown and laugh, our skin is subjected to thousands of involuntary micro-contractions every day, which lead to wrinkles and they can become more visible over time. It is the muscle relaxant properties in spilanthes acmella that slows down these micro-contractions, making it effective at helping to reduce the appearance of these fine lines. So you can keep smiling, frowning, and laughing all day, every day.

Lupin seed extract - This Mediterranean beauty is widely loved for its ability to trigger the production of high quality collagen, promoting firmness and elasticity in your skin. Particularly, it is renowned for its ability to increase the synthesis type I collagen - the most abundant collagen that breaks down with age - which is exactly what you want if you’re experiencing mature, tired and heavy skin.
