Under The Skin

When it comes to choosing skincare and makeup products that are clean, sustainable and high performing there are so many options available. However there are some products that are under the radar and definitely worth knowing about. I have come across three new and notable brands that are definitely worth trying – Kjaer Weis, Inlight Beauty and By Sarah London. All three brands share a common ethos and that is to create beauty products that are natural, ethical, sustainable, good for your skin/body and are high performing.

You may already be familiar with the luxury makeup brand Kjaer Weis. Their makeup is certified organic, has unique sustainable packaging and is formulated without parabens, silicones, petrochemical emulsifiers and synthetic fragrances. Most conventional makeup brands contain a lot of the fillers and ingredients that Kjaer simply will not formulate their makeup with. When it comes to lipsticks, it is actually very important to choose a brand that won’t comprise on ingredients – because conventional lipsticks contain some toxic and nasty ingredients like lead, carmine (crushed up beetles) as well as other heavy metals that are quite detrimental to your health. Which is why I love Kjaer Weis makeup, it’s luxurious, high performing, sustainable and most importanlty formulated without harmful ingredients. Their innovative and intelligent packaging is an important aspect of the brands ethos to be a sustainable brand. All products can be refilled, so wastage is minimised. It’s very clever if you ask me! Their creamy, dreamy lipsticks are not only nourishing on your lips, they also come in a variety of stunning shades. “Good for the world. Great for your skin”.

As I mentioned above conventional lipsticks contain undesirable ingredients and so do most lip balms/glosses. If you look at most lip balms they either contain petroleum jelly (petroleum jelly does include carcinogenic compounds), mineral oil and synthetic fragrances – ingredients that should defineately be avoided. Personally these are ingredients I avoid and don’t want to use on my skin. Instead you should opt for lip balms that are plant-based and formulated with skin loving oils that help to soothe and protect your lips. By Sarah London has a wonderful multitasking and organic lip balm. It’s made with three ingredients, coconut oil, apricot oil and beeswax. It’s a smooth, moisturising balm that also doubles as a lovely hydrating and protecting balm for cuticles, hands, elbows and other dry areas on your body. The brand is a transparent and pride themselves on being honest and open about all their organic ingredients and never testing on animals.

When it comes to taking care of the skin on our body we often neglect it as we focus solely on our face. It is important to direct attention and some tender loving care to the rest of the skin on our bodies, to help repair and restore our skin especially in areas we don’t often pay attention to. I recently switched to using a body oil because of the benefits and ability to deeply moisturise and nourish my skin. As well as having the benefits of firming and toning the skin as well. Which is why I love using Inlight Beauty, this barnd has been on my radar to try and I have always been intruiged by their natural meets scinec formulations. This award-winning beauty brand have a beautiful body oil, Firm and Tone. As the name suggests it is ideal to help tighten, tone and ease water retention. Made with an abundance of powerful plant actives and herbs this body oil is brimming with natural goodness for your skin. This silky smooth oil is fabulous for post travel swelling, swelling in general and also a great detoxifying treatment for cellulite. It contains some notable and detoxing herbs that stimulate circulation and are also effective at cellulite prevention. Oil-based formula means a high concentration of active ingredients – no fillers just pure organic, cold pressed oils and Inlight’s Bio Lipophilic Matrix®. Founder and formulator Dr. Spiezia comes from a background in medicine, medical herbalist and is a renowned skin expert. Inlight beauty combines ancient alchemy and modern science techniques to maximise the energy and beauty of each ingredient, bringing beauty to life.

These three products are from Rêve En Vert Rêve En Vert (REV), an eco sustainable company that is passion about bettering the world through the medium of beauty, fashion and lifestyle.

MEET THE MAKER: THE BEAUTY ARCHIVE

MEET THE BEAUTY ARCHIVE

I’ve always had a fascination with Scandinavian design and it was not a surprise that I found myself drawn to The Beauty Archive. This brand offers more than just lip products, the simplicity and modern style of each product creates a slow and beautiful ritual of self care. The Beauty Archive has become one of my favourite organic, green beauty brands.

1. Where does your interest in slow beauty come from?

My interest in the slow beauty movement sprung out of a need of change. Influenced by my work experiences, I value its holistic approach on beauty and self-care. I have practiced psychotherapy for several years and seen a trend of young adults struggling with mental illness due to higher demands and the up speed pace of society today. We are supposed to be better, do more and faster. I truly believe we need to slow down. Working in the beauty industry I am aware of the impact fast beauty has on our environment and how the products we daily feed our skin affect long-term health. I see slow beauty as a practice, of making informed decisions and first and foremost taking time to take care.

2. How has the Scandinavian culture influenced your lip products?

Scandinavian culture I think emerges from living close to nature. It somehow allows us to be present and to perceive without overstimulation. My aim is to create makeup staples that enhance natural beauty and individuality. In my lip products you can also see contemporary and minimalistic elements, a part of a Scandinavian effortless aesthetics. My wish is for people wearing my makeup to embrace their inner and outer beauty and to feel empowered by it.

3. How important are the ingredients you choose for your formulations?

The ingredients are of most importance. I guess you can call me a perfectionist when it comes to my products. I want them to perform well but never at the expense of our animals or nature. The sustainable perspective of slow beauty is about conscious choices and in my products you will not find ingredients that isn’t natural in its origin, organically produced and vegan. Not using animal derived ingredients is something I care deeply about hence some of the pigments in my red shades are made of tiny amounts of synthetic colorants. My aim is for my products to be enjoyed by everyone. This is also why I have chosen not to add scents in my formulations.

4. What are your favourite shades from the line?

Every shade in my collection is designed with a vision in mind and made to complement each other, individual style preferences and occasions. But if I were to choose, the first product would have to be Wedding Cake lip balm. It is the perfect overnight treatment for dry lips and I never go to sleep without it. It was also the very first product I developed so it is close to my heart. As for my tinted lippies, I think I would go for I Do! and Timeless. I Do! being a subtle, yet buildable, everyday peachy pink tint and Timeless, my to-go-to matte red lip cream which I love wearing with a clean base and just some black mascara. The runner up to I Do! is Bridesmaid’s Blush, which I love and use a lot on both lips and cheeks.

5. What is your hero beauty product?

My personal hero product(s) would have to be skincare. With a clean and moisturized skin you set the best start for any makeup to perform its best. A mild cleanser, a face mist and a moisturizing face cream is a great start. If choosing a hero makeup product though, it would be a multi-tasking concealer. A good concealer covers and at the same time enhances what you want the eye to focus on. There are a variety of nice green beauty concealers out there, some which preferably can be worn as a light overall base. If speaking of a hero product from my own line it will be up to the wearer to decide.
6. What are three things you do, to keep your skin healthy?
Since passing 30, self-care and practicing inner balance has become more important for my skin to stay healthy. I spend more ‘me time’ today than I did in my 20’s and this gives me time to relax and reload. Drinking water, preferably with a touch of lemon and evening green teas help the cleansing process and having a sensible stomach, I try to eat balanced and regularly. Personally, I have seen a positive result in my skin since switching dairy products to vegan alternatives. Right now I’ve got a thing for coconut beverages! Lastly, I try to spend time in the open air with my family and pursuing physical activities I find joyful at the moment.
